Union Maritime, a leading provider of smart shipping solutions, announces the delivery of MT SPA, the world’s first LNG and wind powered Long Range 2 tanker. Delivered on 6 January 2026 in Jingjiang City, People’s Republic of China, the vessel represents a strategic milestone in Union Maritime’s newbuild programme and a significant step in the execution of its decarbonisation strategy.

Built by Yangzijiang Shipbuilding (YZJ), MT SPA is a high specification LNG dual fuel LR2 tanker fitted with WindWings®, making it the most advanced LR2 tanker on the water. The vessel has been designed to reduce emissions while maintaining operational efficiency and strong commercial performance, reflecting Union Maritime’s approach to integrating proven technologies across its fleet.

The vessel is designed to meet FuelEU Maritime requirements through to 2040, including FuelEU Phase 3. Performance assessments show almost a 50 percent improvement against the Energy Efficiency Design Index baseline and more than a 27 percent improvement against the EEDI Phase 3 requirement.

MT SPA is the first of two vessels of this specification ordered by Union Maritime from Yangzijiang Shipbuilding, with the second scheduled for delivery in March 2026. The vessel forms part of Union Maritime’s LR2 newbuild series, with each ship named after iconic Formula 1 circuits. The programme supports a broader fleet renewal strategy focused on efficiency, performance and sustainability at scale.

Laurent Cadji, Managing Director at Union Maritime, said: “The delivery of MT SPA marks an important step in the delivery of our long-term strategy. By combining LNG dual fuel capability with wind assisted propulsion, we are investing in solutions that deliver tangible emissions reductions today, while retaining the flexibility required for the future. This approach underpins our fleet renewal programme and our commitment to decarbonisation at scale.”
