Tradepoint Atlantic today announced that a new solar energy installation — among the largest in Maryland — is now operational.
Built by Solar Gaines LLC, the project consists of a 13.1 MW (DC) rooftop solar array on the second Floor & Decor building at Tradepoint Atlantic. It is expected to generate approximately 17,500 MWh of carbon-free electricity annually into the Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) service area.
Through a Virtual Power Purchase Agreement (VPPA) with WGL Energy Services Inc. (WGL Energy), the project is designed to partially offset the electricity consumption of Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) and provide BWI with renewable energy certificates (RECs). Tradepoint Atlantic’s proximity to BWI makes it an ideal location to generate this sustainable energy.
“Tradepoint Atlantic is proud to help power Maryland from within and deliver sustainable energy to the Baltimore community,” said Kerry Doyle, Managing Director of Tradepoint Atlantic. “This solar installation is part of a larger strategy to utilize our expansive industrial rooftop footprint to help generate clean domestic energy that will fuel Tradepoint’s growth while helping our state meet its clean energy goals and support strategic partnerships like BWI.”

“This new installation helps to power our airport operations with clean, locally generated energy while advancing our long-term sustainability goals and reducing costs,” said Shannetta Griffin, Executive Director/CEO of BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport. “This partnership supports Maryland’s clean energy initiatives and is an important step toward a more resilient airport."
“At BGE, we believe solar energy is a cornerstone of Maryland’s energy future," said David Bloom, Senior Manager of Energy Acquisition at BGE. "By supporting this solar energy installation at Tradepoint Atlantic, we’re helping reduce carbon emissions, enhance energy resilience, and provide sustainable, locally generated energy."
“WGL Energy is honored to be a part of this exciting collaboration,” said Todd Sandford, Vice President of Operations, WGL Energy. “The project reflects a true team effort and aligns with our commitment to innovative energy solutions that deliver lasting value to our customers, the community, and the region.”
The new array complements and expands upon several existing rooftop solar installations across 5.4 million square feet at the vast Tradepoint Atlantic industrial facility totaling 26.4 MW (DC) of energy production onsite.
