Rhenus South Africa has successfully executed the complex, multi‑layered logistics required to bring South Africa’s first-ever ScreenX cinema to life at Durban’s Gateway Mall, delivering an immersive 270° panoramic movie experience for Nu Metro. This project showcases Rhenus’ capability to manage highly sensitive, globally sourced equipment under tight timelines while ensuring flawless execution from origin to installation.
With 29,857 kilograms of fragile, high‑value technology shipped from five countries - the USA, China, Korea, Belgium and the Netherlands - Rhenus led every phase of the operation: international air freight, customs clearance, warehouse staging, last‑mile delivery and on‑site coordination. All milestones were delivered within an eight‑week project window, despite ongoing mall construction and restricted site access.
A seamless global‑to‑local logistics achievement
Rhenus’ global and South African teams worked in sync to manage multi‑origin shipments arriving in the correct sequence for installation. Key technical and operational elements included:
- Fast, synchronized air freight from five global origins to meet strict project deadlines
- Flawless customs clearance, including NRCS regulatory compliance, Letters of Authority and permits for controlled items
- Precise unpacking and staging at the Durban Rhenus warehouse to support each installation phase
- Expert on‑site supervision, managing delivery to a construction‑phase, limited‑access 4th‑floor installation zone requiring specialised equipment
- Daily communication and milestone reporting, ensuring complete transparency for Nu Metro.
Precision handling for a high‑stakes delivery
The project required specialised handling of ScreenX systems, projectors, speakers, oversized fixtures and delicate components, all delivered without damage. Rhenus’ expertise ensured complete protection of the equipment while navigating the challenges of synchronised global shipping, industry‑specific regulations and a construction‑active site.
