Next time customers in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska drive home in a new Volvo, that vehicle most likely arrived through the Port of Tacoma and processed at Wallenius Wilhelmsen Solutions’ (WW Solutions) Taylor Way Auto Facility.
WW Solutions began operating at the new, 90-acre Taylor Way Auto Facility in December 2018.
The addition of Volvo Cars emphasizes WW Solutions’ commitment to its four-corner strategy and growing the marine cargo business in the Pacific Northwest. It also diversifies the Port of Tacoma and The Northwest Seaport Alliance’s cargo portfolio, which remains a cornerstone of our business philosophy and a driver for profitability.
In 2019 the Port of Tacoma and the NWSA celebrated a record year, handling nearly 200,000 auto units.
WW Solutions has called in the Puget Sound region with roll-on/roll-off ships since 1992. The Norway-based shipping company signed a 30-year lease with the Port in 2018 to build an auto processing facility at the former Kaiser Aluminum site. The NWSA also signed a 10-year vessel services agreement with WW Solutions and manages the cargo-handling operations.
Since 2006, the Port of Tacoma has spent $11 million remediating this formerly contaminated property. The Port’s efforts in putting this valuable land back into productive use shows its commitment to the region’s job growth and sustainability.
