Minnesota’s Hastings Bridge Wins ABC Construction Award in SPMT Category
Jan 07, 2016
PASADENA, CA - Hastings Bridge, designed by Parsons, was recently named the Best Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) Project in the Self-Propelled Modular Transporter (SPMT) category in the National ABC Construction Awards. As the lead designer to the joint venture design-build construction team, Parsons also provided engineering management services on the project, which was recognized for innovation, uniqueness, and ingenuity in bridge construction. “Parsons is honored to receive this distinguished award,” said Don Graul, Parsons Group President. “The corporation is recognized around the world for state-of-the-art construction techniques, including accelerated bridge construction. This award is further testimony of our continuing commitment to the principles of sustainability, quality, and cutting-edge solutions.”
Built across the Mississippi River in the historic town of Hastings, MN, the 545-ft-long. 3.300-ton main span freestanding tied arch of the bridge was erected on land, transferred onto barges with SPMTs, floated downriver, positioned between the piers using SPMTs and a skid rail system, and finally lifted 55 feet into place with strand jacks. The entire process was completed within 48-hours, which significantly reduced impacts to the navigational channel and adjacent roadways. To date, it is the largest bridge move in the United States using SPMTs.
Built for the Minnesota Department of Transportation, the new $120 million, 4-lane bridge replaced the previous 2-lane fracture-critical and structurally deficient continuous steel-arch truss built in 1950. The new Hastings Bridge has a 100-year design life.
