The two first and biggest mobile harbour cranes in container configuration on its way from Germany to Uruguay
Montecon ordered a second LHM 800 due to increased demand
New milestone in the long term partnership with Liebherr Maritime Cranes
Rostock, Germany - Liebherr Maritime Cranes recently delivered first two Liebherr mobile harbour cranes LHM 800 in container configuration to Montecon in Uruguay.
In 2015 Montecon ordered the first giant mobile harbour cranes, type LHM 800 for container operation. Due to their increasing demand for mobile container handling solutions they subsequently ordered a second unit. Both machines recently started their nearly 13,000 km long journey from Rostock, Germany to Montevideo, Uruguay.
“The two LHM 800 in container configuration are a future-oriented addition to the existing cargo handling fleet of Montecon. Thanks to the existing fleet of Liebherr mobile harbour cranes and the two new LHM 800, Montevideo represents a highly attractive port of call for shipping lines”, says Leopold Berthold, Managing Director of Liebherr-MCCtec Rostock GmbH.
Bigger Vessels – Bigger Cranes Liebherr Maritime Cranes has a long term partnership with the Montevideo-based terminal operator Montecon. It all started 15 years ago with the first purchase of a panamax Liebherr mobile harbour crane, type LHM 400, which was delivered in 2001.
Montecon quickly realized the number of advantages a Liebherr mobile crane entails. The high flexibility combined with powerful performance went well together with Montecons business model for the port of Montevideo in Uruguay. Over the past few years Montecon has made a number of significant investments to further enhance its operational performance.
Ports around the world have to handle bigger vessels and need to amend their equipment and infrastructure to maintain competitiveness. The range of Montecons mobile harbour crane fleet steadily reflects the growth of vessel sizes.
In 2012 and 2013, Montecon invested again heavily in Liebherr mobile harbour cranes and ordered three LHM 600s, the largest model at that time. In the course of this huge order Montecon visited Liebherr to have a closer look at their crane production in the facility in Rostock, Germany. During this visit the idea of an even bigger crane than the LHM 600 was born: The LHM 800.
Increase container throughput
The LHM 800 is the most advanced mobile solution for the handling of large container vessels. In container handling configuration the eye level is above 40 metres, which naturally eases the handling of large vessels. Thanks to its mighty outreach of 64 metres, the LHM 800 is able to efficiently operate fully loaded container, even in the 22nd row. The LHM 800 continues the LHM-range’s tradition of high working speeds by hoisting and lowering containers with up to 120 metres per minute. This allows for up to 40 boxes per hour.
The recently delivered machines are the Liebherr mobile harbour cranes number eight and nine, ordered by Montecon. This strong dedication to quality made by Liebherr underlines the close partnership between the two companies.
Future orientated cargo handling solutions
These giant machines represent a new opportunity for many ports in the world to add a mobile and versatile solution to their cargo handling fleet, allowing for more flexibility and more capacity. The LHM 800 is a valuable addition to the Liebherr range, which now includes seven sizes with load capacities of 42 tonnes to 308 tonnes. With more
than 1,400 units delivered in more than 100 countries worldwide Liebherr mobile harbor cranes have managed to convince in all application areas.
Whats this about?
It is the “uncontained” shipments that draw a lifetime allegiance of purveyors of the business. As one MPV (Multi Purpose Vessel) analyst bluntly said as an aside, “Boxes are boring.”
