Gulf Maritime Gen.Trading Contracting Co. Wll, member of Worldwide Project Consortium (WWPC) for Kuwait, handled receiving, transportation and placing onto the foundation of a heavy and oversized Transformer from an incoming ocean vessel at Shuaiba port to a job site in 125 km distance. The project was jointly operated with fellow WWPC member Hansaeng Express Co. Ltd, Korea for the Ministry of Electricity in Kuwait.
The shipment consisted of a transformer measuring 10 x 4.6 x 5.2 meter and weighing 173 ton. The project was very challenging. The transformer was loaded on multi axle trailer deploying12 axles.
Due to the over dimension of the transformer, a long route had to be travelled to avoid bridges, remove the road dividers to crossroads and in some locations it was necessary to drive against the traffic to reach the plant location.
Leveling and compaction enroute on a service road was a must to avoid the trailer getting stuck in the sand. After transportation to the final site, the transformer was stooled down for jacking and sliding operation, which was successfully completed under extreme hot temperature of more than 50 degrees Celsius.
Of course, a special permit and police escort was required during transportation. The main trailer was escorted by pilot vehicles and an additional low bed trailer was deployed to carry the grader and forklift to remove road obstacles during the movement.
This project was executed under extreme time pressure, to make the transformer operational prior to peak summer. Despite the challenging road conditions and the extreme temperature, the transformer was delivered in safe and sound conditions on time.
