Jacques Cousteau’s legendary ship, Calypso, successfully handled by CMA CGM LOG
Mar 30, 2016
CMA CGM LOG, a CMA CGM subsidiary specializing in freight forwarding and logistics solutions, successfully loaded the Calypso on Monday March 14th in Concarneau, France. The Calypso is Jacques Cousteau’s legendary ship and star of the “Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau”. The vessel is heading to Turkey, where she will be renovated.
CMA CGM LOG expert operations
CMA CGM LOG mobilized its specialist team to source customized transport solutions appropriate for this exceptional operation.
CMA CGM LOG, working closely with CMA CGM teams, selected and chartered a suitable vessel. As the Calypso – the 40m legend weighing 110 tons - had to be loaded on to a vessel large enough to have two cranes with the power to lift her yet small enough to berth in the port of Concarneau.
CMA CGM LOG also coordinated preparatory steps: the marine railway (the metallic structure on which the Calypso was placed) had to be customized and strengthened to secure this bespoke cargo.
CMA CGM LOG also managed cargo handling pre-loading and organized the transportations of Calypso’s accessories by containers.
On Monday March 14th, the Calypso was successfully placed inside the vessel. She left Concarneau on March 15th to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Turkey, where she will be renovated.
The Calypso: 45 years of scientific exploration
The Calypso is Jacques Cousteau’s famous oceanographic vessel. From 1951 to 1996, she sailed the World’s oceans undertaking scientific explorations. The vessel also became a movie studio: shot in 1954, “The silent World” won a Palme d’Or at the 1955 Cannes Film Festival. Tragically on January 8th 1996, the Calypso was involved in a mooring accident and sank. Now raised and once renovated, the Calypso will remain at the service of science and education, as Jacques Cousteau wished.
