A bridge under construction in the eastern Indian city of Kolkata collapsed and killed at least 17 people, with more casualties feared, according to local police. Rescue operations were on at the site of the disaster, a congested part of the city where authorities estimate at least 100 people could be trapped under the mangled mess of steel, concrete and other debris. About 80 of the injured were already extricated, the police said. Visuals from the locality showed concrete mixer trucks, cargo carriers and yellow taxi cabs under twisted steel beams and huge concrete slabs. IVRCL Ltd., an Indian infrastructure company whose website lists the flyover project, plunged 5.2 percent on Thursday after the accident, the biggest decline since Feb. 11. The main stock exchange in Mumbai sought clarification from the company on the mishap. The builder said the collapse wasn’t due to quality issues, CNBC-TV-18 television channel reported.
